The average age of men in Singapore is projected to rise significantly over the next 25 years, with the greatest increase occurring in men > 65 years old. As this happens, there will be a dramatic increase in age-related health problems too as it has now been shown that hormonal changes in the aging male are associated with significant health problems.

It is natural for men’s testosterone levels to decrease as they get older. Testosterone Deficiency Syndrome (also known as hypogonadism) is a condition that occurs in men as they advance in age. It is also often defined as the biochemical deficiency of testosterone and sperm production, both of which are the major function of the testes.

Androgen replacement therapy (ART), also often referred to as testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), is a form of hormone therapy in which androgens, often testosterone, are replaced and is often prescribed to counter the effects of male hypogonadism. It typically involves the administration of testosterone through intramuscular testosterone injections, testosterone patches or topical testosterone gel.

Process of treatment:

• Prior to starting treatment, a detailed consultation with our Doctor as well as rectal examination and serum PSA is important. A baseline general screen and hormone profile blood test must be ordered.

   

  Testosterone replacement is generally considered a long-term therapy and patients need to be monitored regularly. Within a month or two after treatment is started, we will assess symptoms and testosterone levels. During the first year of therapy, patients should be followed regularly to assess clinical response.
